After graduating from Mississippi State University in 1976, Di
Rushing and her husband, Sam, found themselves back on their family
farm near Merigold, Mississippi, with 350 acres and no real clue
what to do. The couple decided to open the first winery in
Mississippi, and with it, a successful business was born. Six years
later, a small restaurant joined the Delta winery. Both businesses
were thriving by 1990, with eight national award-winning wines, a
beautiful vineyard, and a successful restaurant. But in March of
1990, a series of unforeseen events rocked the operation. After the
Rushings discovered one of the tour guides, Ray Russell, selling
drugs in the winery parking lot, they fired him. He responded with
a terrorizing vengeance that persisted over the next nine months.
In the early morning hours, the former guide broke into the winery,
crept into the wine cellar, and released the entire
inventory—nearly a quarter of a million dollars’ worth—down
the drain. Fortunately, his incompetence thwarted his most
destructive intention to blow up the restaurant. In his rampage, he
broke all the windows, which allowed the gas from the kitchen oven
to escape, sparing the premises. Though the Rushings rebuilt with
the help of their community, Russell continued to stalk and
threaten the young family. As his menacing behavior continued to
escalate, the Rushings closed their business of fourteen years and
moved to Ouray, Colorado, where they began rebuilding their lives.
Culminating in the sudden, violent murders of Russell, his wife,
and his father twenty-five years later, this book tells a story of
both shock and resilience, charting Mississippi history along with
way. Intertwined with the true crime narrative, The Delta in the
Rearview Mirror: The Life and Death of Mississippi’s First Winery

Explores our intertwined spiritual history with cats. We have been
connected to cats for more than 30 million years. To our
prehistoric ancestors cats were deadly predators of the night, and
because of this ancient memory etched onto our DNA, cats epitomise
our fear of the dark. Yet in addition to their connection to the
dark and the shadows, their intelligence, sophisticated physical
abilities, and finely tuned senses also led many cultures to view
cats as connected to the spirit world. Exploring the spiritual
nature of cats, John A. Rush looks at humanity’s fascination and
fear of cats through the ages. He examines spiritual and occult
beliefs connected to cats from Mayan, Aztec, and Native American
mythology as well as from ancient India, Samaria, Babylon, Japan,
and Egypt, including how ancient Egyptians used cats to send
messages to the gods. He reveals why the Catholic Church demonised
cats and how cats are symbols of both Good and Evil. Examining cat
evolution, the author looks at spiritual behaviours attributed to
cats as well as modern biological research into cat behaviour and
their highly sophisticated sensory systems, which, unlike most
other animals, have changed very little over millions of years. He
explores their “psychic” ability to sense what humans cannot
and the origins of their glowing eyes, which has connected cats,
through myth, to both the Underworld and the World of Light. He
also explores similarities between cat and human emotions, cat
communications with us, and the deep connection between cats and
meditation. Revealing the spiritual journey of the cat from
fearsome predator to occult symbol to household companion, the
author shows how, in many ways, cats are mirrors of us, reflecting
our conflicting dual nature that is at once loving yet distant,
magical yet vengeful, and above all, deeply connected to the spirit
world.

In Elizabethan England, political intrigue abounds as the Tudors and the Cecils battle it out over the succession of Queen Elizabeth I (Joely Richardson/Vanessa Redgrave), and the Essex Rebellion mobilises against her. Enter the dashing and wildly talented Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (Jamie Campbell Bower/Rhys Ifans), who not only fathers an illegitimate son in a clandestine incestuous relationship with Queen Elizabeth, but is also the secret author of the plays labeled with the name of William Shakespeare (Rafe Spall).
Shakespeare in Love

What Will needs is a muse - and she appears in the form of the beautiful (and betrothed) Lady Viola. The path of true love doesn't run smooth for Will, however - Viola is engaged to be married to the insufferable Lord Wessex at the command of Queen Elizabeth. The joys and tragedy of his own life soon find their way onto the page in a moving, witty and spellbinding tale.

An exploration of the captivating work and mystical outlook of the
modern artist Remedios Varo, focusing on her years in Mexico City
This publication offers a definitive look at the artistic
practice of Remedios Varo (1908–1963) following her emigration
from Spain to Mexico City in 1941. Her work from 1955 to 1963 made
a lasting contribution to modern art and the legacy of Surrealism.
In Remedios Varo: Science Fictions, fresh historical and material
findings establish the integral relationship between Varo’s
layered interests—in alchemy, architecture, magic, mysticism,
philosophy, and science—and her beguiling technical approach to
art making. Essays detail specific works’ complex stories and
spectacular surfaces. An illustrated taxonomy of Varo’s artistic
techniques, including automatic mark making as well as careful
manipulation of materials and media, offers new insights into the
artist’s craft. An illustrated inventory of a major portion of
Varo’s library—published here for the first time—reveals the
artist’s engagement with a wide range of subjects. Stunning new
photography of many of her artworks are presented within a dynamic
geometric design inspired by the artist’s work. Situating Varo as
a woman working in midcentury Mexico City and living among a
tight-knit community of local and émigré artists, poets, and
thinkers, the catalogue illuminates the complex worldview that
shaped her search for individual and collective transcendence.

A Next Big Idea Club's August 2023 Must-Read Book An astonishing,
vital book about Antarctica, climate change, and motherhood from
the author of Rising, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in General
Nonfiction. In 2019, fifty-seven scientists and crew set out
onboard the Nathaniel B. Palmer. Their destination: Thwaites
Glacier. Their goal: to learn as much as possible about this
mysterious place, never before visited by humans, and believed to
be both rapidly deteriorating and capable of making a catastrophic
impact on global sea-level rise. In The Quickening, Elizabeth Rush
documents their voyage, offering the sublime—seeing an iceberg
for the first time; the staggering waves of the Drake Passage; the
torqued, unfamiliar contours of Thwaites—alongside the workaday
moments of this groundbreaking expedition. A ping-pong tournament
at sea. Long hours in the lab. All the effort that goes into caring
for and protecting human life in a place that is inhospitable to
it. Along the way, she takes readers on a personal journey around a
more intimate question: What does it mean to bring a child into the
world at this time of radical change? What emerges is a new kind of
Antarctica story, one preoccupied not with flag planting but with
the collective and challenging work of imagining a better future.
With understanding the language of a continent where humans have
only been present for two centuries. With the contributions and
concerns of women, who were largely excluded from voyages until the
last few decades, and of crew members of color, whose labor has
often gone unrecognized. The Quickening teems with their
voices—with the colorful stories and personalities of Rush’s
shipmates—in a thrilling chorus. Urgent and brave, absorbing and
vulnerable, The Quickening is another essential book from Elizabeth
Rush.
Captain Jack Sparrow is back in this adventure sequel. Once again
thrown into the world of the supernatural, Jack (Johnny Depp) finds
out that he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davy Jones (Bill
Nighy), Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running
out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to
eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. But Jack will not
give in without a fight, which is especially bad news for Will
Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), who
always seem to get caught up in Jack's mishaps. If Jack can't find
a way to rid himself of Davy Jones once and for all, it may just
spell the end for the three adventurers.

Given the turbulence in the international order in recent years,
one of the central concerns among observers of world politics is
the question of China's ultimate goals. As China emerges as a
superpower that rivals the United States, American policymakers
grappling with this century's greatest geopolitical challenge are
looking for answers to a series of critical questions. Does China
have expansive ambitions? Does it have a grand strategy to achieve
them? If so, what is it and what should the United States do about
it? In The Long Game, Rush Doshi draws from a rich base of Chinese
primary sources, including decades worth of party documents, leaked
materials, and memoirs by party leaders, to demonstrate that China
is in fact playing a long, methodical game to replace America as a
regional and global hegemon. He traces the basic evolution of
Chinese strategy, showing how it evolved in response to changes in
US policy and its position in the world order. After charting these
shifts over time, Doshi offers a comprehensive yet "asymmetric"
plan for an effective US response to this challenge: one that
undermines China's ambitions without competing dollar-for-dollar,
ship-for-ship, or loan-for-loan. Ironically, the approach mirrors
China's own current strategy of subtly weakening Chinese leverage
in the region and elsewhere while expanding US leverage over China.
A bold assessment of what the Chinese government's true foreign
policy objectives are, The Long Game offers valuable insight to the
most important rivalry in world politics.
ohnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush star in this Disney swashbuckler based on the theme-park's rides. But they are up against more than just sword-swinging pirates; the crew of the Black Pearl are cursed to spend their time between the living and the dead and only the blood of Elizabeth can break the curse. Will and Sparrow have therefore to overcome the undeadly crew and rescue the governor's daughter and this culminates in a special-effects-laden sword fight between Sparrow and Barbarossa.

The classic case for why government must support science-with a new
essay by physicist and former congressman Rush Holt on what
democracy needs from science today Science, the Endless Frontier is
recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of
science in society and government's responsibility to support
scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the
director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development
during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making
the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation's
health, security, and prosperity. Bush's vision set the course for
US science policy for more than half a century, building the
world's most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a
changing funding landscape and challenges to science's very
credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful
reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike
depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government.
This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new
companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt,
who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society
needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report's legacy and
relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the
public's ability to cope with today's issues-such as public health,
the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies
in modern society-requires a more capacious understanding of what
science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think
of their obligation to society and what the public should demand
from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science's
value for democracy and society at large. A touchstone for
concerned citizens, scientists, and policymakers, Science, the
Endless Frontier endures as a passionate articulation of the power
and potential of science.
